The Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) is excited to announce that Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to replace the outgoing Mr. Adama Dieng as Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. AIPG applauds Ms. Nderitu’s selection, which reflects an appreciation of the vital expertise, investment, and innovation of the Global South on issues of genocide and mass atrocity prevention leadership at the highest international level.
AIPG congratulates Ms. Nderitu, alumna of the 2014 Global Raphael Lemkin Seminar and Auschwitz Institute instructor, on this prestigious appointment and looks forward to supporting her work with the Office of the Special Adviser to build a world that prevents genocide and other mass atrocities. The Auschwitz Institute would equally like to thank Mr. Adama Dieng for his leadership and all that he has accomplished during his tenure as Special Adviser.
Ms. Nderitu is a prolific, experienced, and innovative contributor to the fields of peacebuilding and violence prevention, both in her native Kenya and around the globe. A highly experienced mediator, she served as Commissioner of Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission and as a Founding Member and co-Chair of the Uwiano Platform for Peace, which was pivotal in preventing violence related to the 2013 elections in Kenya. She is widely published as an author and academic and has developed Kenya’s first curricular training manual for teachers on the topic of inclusion and conflict prevention. Ms. Nderitu is also a long-standing member of Kenya’s national mechanism, the National Committee on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity and all Forms of Discrimination.
