Master Class on Migration Crisis Project in El Salvador

On August 18, 2022, the Latin America Program (LAP) of the Auschwitz Institute, with the institutional support of the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman of El Salvador (PDDH), organized a master class on “Prevention of Violence and Discrimination against People in a Situation of Human Mobility in El Salvador” as part of the project, “Prevention of Atrocities in the Current Migration Crisis in El Salvador.”

During the event, the findings of the diagnostic report and recommendations on the situation of people in human mobility that AIPG has been developing since March 2022 were presented to participants of the virtual courses on the Fundamentals of Atrocity Prevention in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

The master class was conducted by Celia Medrano and María Fernanda Castillo Urrutia – human rights specialists and technical consultants of AIPG – who presented national and international standards on prevention and protection, as well as recommendations for the creation of public policies that will help to improve living conditions for migrants, refugees, and displaced persons.

The welcoming remarks were delivered by Eugenia Carbone, Director of Programs LAP, and Saúl Baños, Deputy Attorney for the Defense of Migrants and Citizen Security. During their speeches, both reiterated the need to continue working together on prevention to strengthen public policies with a human rights approach, especially concerning the most vulnerable groups.

This event is part of ongoing efforts to expand and strengthen the network for the prevention of mass atrocities in the region, disseminate the findings of the diagnostic report, and continue the work of building fairer and more egalitarian societies in Latin America.
