Training Master Class in Brazil

On September 1 and 15, 2022, the Latin America Program (LAP) of the Auschwitz Institute, supported by the zivik funding program of the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) and in collaboration with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the Rights of the Citizen in Brazil, organized two master classes for participants of the online courses developed under the project, “Atrocity Prevention in the Context of the Migration Crisis in Brazil.”

The first master class on September 1 addressed the challenges of atrocity prevention in Latin America and human mobility from the perspective of the Inter-American System. The class featured a presentation by Joao Guilherme Casagrande, Specialist of the Rapporteurship on the Rights of Migrants of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

During the event, Eugenia Carbone, Director of AIPG’s Latin America Program, and Attorney André de Carvalho Ramos, Coordinator of the PFDC’s Working Group on Migration and Refugees, recognized the participants for their commitment to continue building capacities and alliances for the protection of people in vulnerable situations.

The second master class on September 15 focused on analyzing different strategies for the prevention of discrimination and violence against refugees in Brazil. The class was part of the opening event of the virtual course on Migration and the Prevention of Atrocities in Brazil. Discussants on the panel included Manuel Gándara and María Villarreal, human rights specialists and AIPG consultants for developing public policies for the protection of young migrants in the city of Boa Vista, Roraima State.

The event also featured the participation of Attorney Enrico Rodrigues de Freitas, Coordinator of the PFDC’s Working Group on Freedom of Expression, who encouraged participants to continue building strategic partnerships at the local level, as well as permanent spaces for training and reflection on human rights and prevention.

Through the presentations, attendees learned about proposals for strengthening relevant institutions to ensure access to education and the labor market for young people in a situation of mobility.
